He learned beekeeping as a child in a Transylvanian acacia forest, the sixth generation of his family to do so. He was raised in the Transylvanian countryside, where his father Nistor Fanel and grandfather Nistor Grigore worked the family hives. He was handed a smoker at five years old and became the sixth generation of his family to keep bees. At 27 he relocated to London and took a business degree at the University of Greenwich, founding HoneyBee & Co. in 2020 on a principle borrowed from his grandfather: sell only what you would be proud to put on your own table. His father remains the family’s main beekeeper in Romania today. I learned beekeeping from five in a Transylvanian acacia forest. My grandfather placed a smoker in my hand and a dripping frame in the other.
