Buying Guide
Ordering Honey Online: A First-Time Buyer's Guide
Buying honey you cannot taste first takes a little trust. Here is how to order well, judge a seller honestly, and know exactly what turns up at your door.
Ordering honey online should be simple, and mostly it is. But honey is one of the most adulterated foods in the world, so a jar bought unseen is only as good as the seller behind it. The good news: once you know what to look for, telling a trustworthy honey from a dressed-up one takes about thirty seconds of reading a product page.
This guide walks through exactly that. What separates real raw honey from the supermarket kind, how to read a seller before you buy, what to expect on delivery, and why a jar that arrives set solid is a good sign, not a fault.

Six things to check before you order
Run any honey seller, us included, through this quick checklist. A good one passes every point without you having to dig.
Named origin, not just "honey"
The label and product page should tell you which country, and ideally which region or beekeeper, the honey was harvested from. UK law requires the country of origin on the label. Vague wording like "blend of EU and non-EU honeys" is legal, but it tells you the honey has been mixed from many sources, which is the opposite of single-origin. We name the landscape behind every jar.
The word "raw", and what backs it up
"Raw" means the honey was never heated above hive temperature or ultra-filtered, so its natural enzymes, pollen and character survive. A trustworthy seller explains what raw means to them rather than just stamping the word on. If you want the full picture, our guide to raw honey versus regular honey covers it.
A real safety standard
Look for a recognised food-safety credential. Our British honey supplier holds SALSA Certification, the nationally recognised standard for small UK food producers. It is independent proof that the honey is produced and handled to a consistent, audited standard.
Honest reviews you can read
Genuine, readable reviews from named customers matter more than a star average with no detail. A seller confident in their honey will show them openly. Ours sit at 4.9 stars across 55 Google reviews.
Clear delivery and returns terms
You should be able to see delivery times, costs, and the returns policy before you reach checkout, not after. Beware anyone promising same-day or next-day honey with no detail: good honey is posted carefully, not rushed. We are plain about ours below.
A real story behind the brand
Honey is a food of place and people. A seller who can tell you who keeps the bees and where is far more likely to be selling you the real thing than a faceless label. Ours comes from six generations of the Nistor family, in Transylvania and Britain.

What "raw" really means when you cannot taste first
This is the heart of buying honey online. You are trusting a description instead of your own tongue, so the description has to mean something. Raw honey is cold-extracted and never pasteurised, which keeps the enzymes, pollen and antioxidants that industrial processing strips away. Supermarket honey is usually heated and ultra-filtered so it stays permanently clear and pours the same every time, and that consistency is exactly the sign it has been processed.
Real raw honey does the opposite. It varies. It changes with the season and the harvest, and over time it will often set, or crystallise, in the jar. If a seller's honey never changes and never sets, that tells you something about how much has been done to it. Everything we make at HoneyBee & Co. is cold-extracted and never heated above hive temperature, which is why ours behaves exactly this way.
Supermarket honey and artisan honey are not the same product
This is the single biggest thing to understand before you order. A supermarket jar and an artisan jar can both legally be called honey, and they can sit at similar prices, but they are made in fundamentally different ways.
Mass-market honey is a commodity. It is typically bought in bulk from multiple countries, blended to hit a consistent colour and flavour, pasteurised to kill the yeasts that would otherwise ferment it, and ultra-filtered so it stays clear on the shelf for years. That blending is why so many labels read simply as a mixture of honeys from more than one country: by the time it reaches the jar, nobody can tell you which hive it came from.
Artisan honey is the opposite. It is harvested from identified hives in an identified place, extracted cold, and jarred as it is. It varies between harvests, because the flowers vary. It sets in the jar, because nothing has been done to stop it.
| Mass-produced supermarket honey | Artisan raw honey | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Blended from many producers and often several countries | Single origin, traceable to the apiary and beekeeper |
| Heat | Usually pasteurised at high temperature for shelf stability | Never heated above hive temperature, so enzymes survive |
| Filtering | Ultra-filtered, which strips out pollen and fine particles | Coarse-strained only, so natural pollen remains |
| Consistency | Identical in every jar, every month of the year | Varies by harvest and season, as real food does |
| Crystallisation | Engineered to stay liquid for years | Sets naturally over time, which is normal and expected |
| Price driver | Volume and scale | Harvest size, labour and provenance |
Neither is illegal and neither is a scandal in itself. But if you are paying artisan prices, you should be getting artisan honey, and the checklist above is how you tell. A jar that names its landscape, admits it will crystallise, and stands behind a safety standard is doing something a blended commodity jar cannot.
Our own split is simple and we say it plainly: Wildflower, Soft Set and Heather come from a British apiary supplier who holds SALSA Certification; Acacia, Sunflower and Linden come from the family hives in Transylvania where the Nistor family has kept bees for six generations. All six are raw, cold-extracted and single-origin. You can read more about our British honey and how it is produced.
Bundles: the easiest way to order more than one
Most people ordering honey online want to try a few, or buy for someone else. Our Bundles do both. Every multi-jar Bundle saves 5% and ships free across the UK, and each one is built around a person or an occasion rather than a random assortment.
Worth knowing: many honey sellers only give free UK delivery once you spend £50 or more. Ours applies from three jars, which covers every Bundle we make. Browse them all in the full Bundles range.
One-off order or subscription?
Most people ordering honey for the first time buy a jar or two to try. That is exactly what the shop is for. But if you already know honey is a daily part of your life, on toast, in tea, in cooking, a subscription is usually the better way to buy it.
How the subscription works
Choose your honey, set how often you want it, monthly, every two months, or every three, and it arrives automatically at 20% off every delivery, with free UK delivery on every order regardless of quantity. You can pause, change, or cancel any time from your account, with no commitment.
Acacia and most varieties come to £8.79 a jar on subscription instead of £10.99; Heather is £10.39 instead of £12.99. Subscribers also get early access to our seasonal and limited harvests. Browse the full subscription range.
Every advantage of subscribing
A subscription is not a lock-in. It is simply the cheapest and easiest way to keep honey in the house, and you stay in control of all of it.
One note on stacking: the 20% subscription saving and the 15% NHS Discount are separate programmes and cannot be combined. For most NHS staff the subscription price works out better, but you are free to choose whichever suits you.
Buy it the easy way
Set your favourite honey on subscription and save 20% on every delivery, with free UK delivery every time. Pause or cancel whenever you like.
See the subscription rangeIf you would rather taste across the range before committing to one, a set is the easiest first order. The Discovery Trio pairs our three most popular honeys; the Full Collection brings all six. Both ship free, and both make it easy to find your favourite before you subscribe to it.
What to expect on delivery
Here is exactly what happens after you order from us, and what any careful honey seller should offer.
Our delivery, plainly
Single-jar and two-jar orders carry standard postage. We do not make same-day or twenty-four-hour claims: good honey is packed with care, not couriered in a panic.
That two-to-five-day window is a deliberate choice, not a shortcoming. Honey is heavy, glass is fragile, and getting a jar to you unbroken matters more than shaving a day off. Every order is tracked, so you always know where it is.
If your honey arrives set solid, that is exactly right
New online honey buyers sometimes worry when a jar turns up cloudy or firm rather than clear and runny. Do not. Crystallisation is a natural property of raw honey: the glucose in it gradually forms fine crystals. It is chemistry, not spoilage, and it is one of the clearest signs your honey has not been processed to stay artificially liquid. To soften it, stand the closed jar in warm water no hotter than 40 degrees. Our guide to why raw honey sets explains the science, and our myths guide clears up the rest.
